The Montessori Method

After years of expression mainly in pre-schools, Montessori philosophy is finally being used as originally intended, as a method of seeing children as they really are and of creating environments which foster the fulfillment of their highest potential – spiritual, emotional, physical, and intellectual – as members of a family, the world community, and the Cosmos.

Dr. Montessori gave the world a scientific method, practical and tested, for bringing forth the very best in young human beings. She taught adults how to respect individual differences and to emphasize social interaction and the education of the whole personality rather than the teaching of a specific body of knowledge.

Montessori practice is always up-to-date and dynamic because observation and the meeting of needs is continual and specific for each child. When physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional needs are met, children glow with excitement and a drive to play and work with enthusiasm, to learn, and to create. They exhibit a desire to teach, help, and care for others and for their environment.

The high level of academic achievement so common in Montessori schools is a natural outcome of experience in such a supportive environment. The Montessori method of education is a model which serves the needs of children of all levels of mental and physical ability as they live and learn in a natural, mixed-age group that is very much like the society they will live in as adults.

Today, Montessori teacher training centers and schools exist on all continents. There are Montessori parenting classes, "Nidos" (nests for infants), infant communities, "children’s houses" (for ages 3-6), and classes for children up to age eighteen in public and private schools. Montessori education works in gifted and talented programs and for children with developmental disabilities of all kinds. Many parents are using Dr. Montessori's discoveries to raise and educate their children at home.

The discoveries of Maria Montessori are valuable for anyone living and working with children in any situation

FAQ

  • Why should I send my child to Beverly Hills Academy?
At Beverly Hills Academy, our goal is to foster a positive identity in each student as an American Muslim, equipping them with the intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual, and physical readiness to become tomorrow's leaders. We encourage our students to integrate academic skills, Qur'anic principles, and ethical behavior, empowering them to make positive contributions to the global community. Our aim is to cultivate a well-rounded character in every student, combining knowledge, excellence, and a strong commitment to the betterment of their family, community, and humanity as a whole.
  • What is the Montessori Method?
Montessori education places emphasis on engaging all five senses for learning, going beyond traditional methods of listening, watching, or reading. In Montessori classrooms, children have the freedom to learn at their own pace and choose activities from a wide array of options. This approach fosters an exciting process of discovery, resulting in concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a genuine love for learning. Montessori classrooms consist of mixed-age groups, such as 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12, creating communities where older children naturally share their knowledge with younger peers. Overall, Montessori represents a fundamentally different approach to education.
  • Can I do Montessori at home with my child?
Montessori principles apply to both home and school settings. At home, parents can create a sense of belonging by involving children in everyday routines and encouraging independence. Preschoolers benefit from participating in activities such as meal preparation, cleaning, gardening, and caring for belongings. In schools, homeschooling parents often adopt the Montessori philosophy, prioritizing the child's interests and uninterrupted concentration. However, trained Montessori teachers are crucial for proper implementation in a school setting, utilizing specialized learning equipment and creating a positive social environment. Social development is integral to Montessori education, allowing children to thrive alongside peers.
  • Why Montessori for the Kindergarten year?
The sensorial experiences offered in Montessori education hold significant value, which is sometimes overlooked by parents and educators. Research strongly indicates that young children learn best through active observation and hands-on interaction with their surroundings, rather than relying solely on textbooks and workbooks. Montessori materials are specifically designed to provide children with tangible, sensory-based encounters with abstract concepts. For instance, in the context of mathematics, Montessori materials offer concrete experiences that lay the groundwork for a lasting understanding of complex operations like long division. These sensorial impressions serve as a foundation for lifelong learning and comprehension.
  • Can I pay my Zakat to the school?
Dr. Maher Hathout highlights the option of directing Zakat funds to Islamic schools in an article titled "Zakat, Perpetual Charity and Establishing Islamic Schools in America." According to the Holy Quran (Surat Al Taubah, 9:60), Zakat is intended for various categories, including those who strive in God's cause (Fee Sabil Allah). Initially, this was interpreted as financial support for physical confrontation, but as the methods of defending and establishing Islam evolved, the interpretation expanded to include projects that promote and establish Islam in hearts, minds, countries, and societies.
